Feedback, Support to Writers of Fiction at Free SWISH Workshop in St. Petersburg, FL

The FWA St. Petersburg Writers Group is proud to announce a workshop spanning seven weeks this summer, called SWISH: Story Workshop In Summer’s Heat. They look forward to building on the Novel in a Day workshop, with several added benefits.

In addition to covering the essentials of story, participants will be able to read aloud from their work, they will get feedback and critique on their story idea, their story structure, and individual scenes.

The workshop is set on an easy to remember 3-2-1 schedule; that is, the third Saturday in June (6/16), the second Saturday in July (7/14), and the first Saturday in August (8/04). It will be held at the Pinellas Park Public Library, centrally located between Clearwater and St. Petersburg.

Each workshop day is three hours long, from 1:30pm to 4:30pm.

They’re excited to offer this opportunity to writers to take the time to write a complete short story with an end in mind: to get it published. A listing of upcoming anthologies looking for short stories will be sent out so that those who have not already invested time in a story can start something new. For those who want to continue working on their novel, the workshop is useful as well, as a scene is a scene, a plot is a plot, no matter what story it is in.

They ran the Mystery In a Month workshop several years ago, and it was well received. The only disappointment then was that four weeks was not enough to finish a story. The hope here is that the time frame (seven weeks) can accommodate unexpected interruptions and still allow someone to either finish a short story or make significant progress on their novel, in at least one area.

Wounded Hero Voyage I by Robert Brown

True Life Adventure: Against all odds two brothers, Ralph and Bob Brown, attempt to cross the North Atlantic Ocean unescorted in the smallest powerboat, a twenty-one foot open fishing boat (without a cabin or keel), with sides less than a foot high. It is a low budget voyage without the benefit of even enough money to buy insulated boots, waterproof gloves, or full body dry-suits. They left without enough money to even pay for the gas required to make the trip, let alone get back from Europe when and if they got there.

They make city stops often during the day to attempt to find more sponsorship forcing them to travel often at night when it would be more dangerous and cold. They battle huge waves from two hurricanes, almost run out of fuel, and freeze as they pass by hundreds of icebergs and see thousands. The water temperature is around 55 degrees F. off Maine and drops to 35 degrees near Greenland.

During book I, the wind gets as high as 35 mph and when traveling over 35 degree water, makes for a bone chilling ride. In Book 2, the winds reach as high as 65 mph where even the chop is higher than the sides of the boat.

Chantell A. Have a reluctant reader at home? Best known for his Journals of Myrth* series, author Bill Allen takes a stab at the world of non-fantasy with his latest release: Orson Buggy's Lessons for Losers.

"It can be hard getting kids, especially boys, to read, at least when it comes to something longer than a tweet or a text message. A lot of authors try to overcome this (quite successfully) with "gross" boy humor--a lot of farting, belching, puking--all those nasty things young boys think are hilarious. When done well it can be a great way to break through to them. One of my good friends, Lisa Nardini, co-wrote an excellent book of this sort (The Underwear Dare), and I must confess, I'll be ecstatic if my book takes off half as well.

"But I take what I like to think is the "higher road" with my writing. I use a lot of word play and puns, throw in a heaping helping of sarcasm and snarkiness, and then sneak in some valuable lessons that every child should know. When it comes to humor, I never "write down" to kids. Occasionally adults question if the humor is too advanced for children, but I attribute this to the fact that adults just miss a lot, like the way they fail to hear ghosts in the closet or monsters under the bed. Book Review of Private Eye Cats by SN Bronstein

I told you in a previous post about Stan Bronstein's new book Private Eye Cats, Book One: The Case of the Neighborhood Burglars. I just posted the following review on Amazon.com about it.

What a great book. I know this book is for children, but I enjoyed it more than I probably should admit.

Bronstein has created two delightful main characters for this wonderful mystery series. I won't soon forget them, and I won't forget where I was when I learned from this book that cats really can speak in English.

Scooter and Nugget are two loveable house cats used to taking it easy while their humans are at work. You know what they say about cats and curiosity though. When Nugget discovers a way out of the house, they can't resist taking a little trip to see the outside world.

Bronstein wisely puts Nugget in charge of telling the story. She not only tells the story in her own humorous voice, but she also provides interesting and entertaining insight into the feline mind. Their trips outside take on new meaning when they decide to solve the case of the neighborhood burglaries. Will they be able to find the burglars? And if they do find them, how will they ever be able to stop them?

I highly recommend this book. Read this one now and give Bronstein incentive to write faster as you anticipate the next in the series.

A Special Blessing for Sara by June Bryan Belfie

Danville resident, June Bryan Belfie, just had her third novel published by Desert Breeze Publishing House. Her novel, A Special Blessing for Sara focuses on the trials of a young woman trying to move forward after a painful breakup of her engagement. Ms. Belfie has contracted an additional novel, for publication in September.

This novel is set in Bloomsburg and Danville. Sara works as a counselor but finds herself distraught over her own life. She is attracted to a fellow counselor, handsome Ken Barrymore, but is hesitant to start a fresh relationship, for fear of being hurt again. Sara also works with a youth pastor at her church and it's obvious he finds her interesting. Her ex-boyfriend re-appears and she's totally confused by all the attention.

Then Sara receives information that affects her future. Who will she end up with? What happens when a distraught client finds herself endangered? How does a phone call lead to a disclosure that will change her life?

About the Author

Painter, pianist, writer, wife, Mom, and Nana, are only part of who Belfie is. She's worked in banks, a bakery, owned a country inn, a restaurant, owned rental homes, gift and antique shops. She's been divorced and re-married, has five adult children and eight grands, and a husband of 39 years, Jim.

She has lived in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. She has lived in Danville nearly 17 years now, having moved from Millville. In the winter she lives in Titusville, Florida.

Her first e-book, Moving On, was published by Desert Breeze Publishers. Her second book was titled, The Landlord and her third novel, A Special Blessing for Sara, came out April 15^th.
