The fourth novel by Rick Gangraw is now available where books are sold! “A High Price To Pay” is a Historical Fiction set during the American Civil War, and it’s quite a change from his Mystery/Suspense novels and his Romantic Comedy.
Rensey Goode’s family has been on the same property in North Carolina for generations, and his Great-Grandfather fought against the British in the American War for Independence. His family is against secession, but Rensey, his brother, and his neighbors associate the Northern states with Great Britain from that earlier war. They convince themselves that the Northern states are trying to take away the rights of their state and others in the South.
When this group of young men joins the Confederate Army to protect their state from Northern invaders, they share comradery and forced maturity while facing terror-filled scenes of horror. Their experiences lead them to consider what life will be like after the war if any of them survive.
Rensey expresses his feeling in letters home to his family, showing them the front lines through his eyes. He writes of the joys of fighting under great military leaders and the anguish of killing young Yankees who the army says are his enemy. He sees horrors never imagined and wonders if he made the right decision to fight against the North. This young man is wounded and becomes enamored by the young ladies who nurse the soldiers back to health. Considering what his life could be like outside of the War, he yearns for the day when he can be back home for good and start a family of his own.
He is constantly trying to see God’s hand in the war, but while his world is crashing around him, he struggles with his faith. At one point, he considers desertion from the army. After all he’s been through, he is a different person than the boy who joined the army a few years ago, and he wonders how much more he can take.
