About the Book: A revelatory visit to the life and work of Ernest Hemingway, considered in his time to be the greatest living American novelist and short-story writer, winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Mary Dearborn's new biography gives the richest and most nuanced portrait to date of this complex, enigmatically unique American artist, whose same uncontrollable demons that inspired and drove him throughout his life undid him at the end, and whose seven novels and six-short story collections informed--and are still informing--fiction writing generations after his death.
THIS BOOK HAS A LOT OF FIRSTS. The first full biography in fifteen years; the first to be written by a woman; the first to explore the true causes of Hemingway's suicide, and to show them to have been far more complex than previous biographies have put forth; the first to substantially deepen our understanding of the man, the artist, the self-created, larger-than-life force that became Ernest Hemingway. A more nuanced portrait of Hemingway's complex sexuality, particularly seen considering his transvestite son, Gregory, who was transitioning to "Gloria" at the end of his life in 2001; a portrait that reveals Hemingway to have played with gender boundaries considered shocking in his lifetime. The most detailed portrait to date of Hemingway's twenty years in Cuba.
Author Bio: MARY V. DEARBORN received a doctorate in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University, where she was a Mellon Fellow in the Humanities. She is the author of six books.
