“Extraordinary Adventures really is an extraordinary, wonderful novel. Wallace hits the right note with his protagonist, Edsel Bronfman -- a charming, naive man painfully aware of his naiveté, yet not too "precious." Truly an optimistic, large-hearted novel as the catalog copy says. I completely enjoyed the read!”
About the Book: Daniel Wallace (of “Big Fish” fame) likes to say EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES (Published by St. Martin’s Press; On-sale May 30, 2017; $25.99) began with four words: “Bronfman won a prize,” and out of them sprung 100,000 more. Wallace knew immediately that his main character, Edsel Bronfman, with a last name like Bronfman, would be a man whose situation in life was unremarkable (indeed, when we meet him he’s working as a junior executive shipping clerk for an importer of Korean flatware, living in a seedy neighborhood, and spending his free time with his mother) and who could be made happy by something, anything.
In Wallace’s strained new novel, 34-year-old Edsel Bronfman leads an ordinary life until the day he receives a phone call inviting him to spend a weekend in Destin, Fla., as the guest of a condo community. There’s only one catch: the invitation is for two, and Bronfman, who leads a circumscribed existence (to say the least) in Birmingham, Ala., doesn’t know any available women. And to make matters worse, he only has 79 days to find one before the offer expires. Improbable as it seems, that one phone call sends Bronfman’s orderly existence spinning off its axis.
Author Bio: Daniel Wallace is the J. Ross MacDonald Distinguished Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he directs the Creative Writing Program. He is the author of the novels, Big Fish, Ray in Reverse, The Watermelon King, Mr. Sebastian and the Negro Magician, and The Kings and Queens of Roam.
