Colleen Oakley at Writer's Block Bookstore

Writer’s Block Bookstore
124 E. Welbourne Avenue, Winter Park, Florida

Winter Park, FL On Sunday, April 2nd, Writer’s Block Bookstore will host author Colleen Oakley, former Editor in Chief of Women’s Health & Fitness and Senior Editor at Marie Claire. Colleen Oakley will be promoting her latest novel Close Enough to Touch.

Colleen Oakley completely transports the reader into the world of Jubilee Jenkins, a young woman with a rare and incurable medical condition: she is allergic to human touch.

After suffering a humiliating and life-threatening encounter in high school, Jubilee becomes a recluse, holing herself up at home for nine years, with only her beloved books as company.   When we meet Jubilee, she has just received a call informing her of her mother’s death.  No longer receiving her mother’s financial support, Jubilee is forced to leave the comforts of her home and face the outside world and its inhabitants…for the first time in nearly a decade.

CLOSE ENOUGH TO TOUCH is an evocative story—one of love, heartbreak, and the strength of the human character.  Readers will be excited to read a unique, modern love story by a writer that we at Gallery Books feel is an American Jojo Moyes. “It is filled with real life, real people, and the search for happiness that we all recognize. It is a truly moving story from a rare gem of an author.” – Linda Bond, Auntie’s Bookstore, Spokane WA

Colleen Oakley is an Atlanta-based writer and author of the critically acclaimed novel Before I Go.  Her articles, essays, and interviews have been featured in the New York Times, Marie Claire, Redbook, Parade and more.

Nestled between the shore and rolling hills, Miramar Bay is a town offering refuge for even the most burdened of hearts. For one lost man named Connor Larkin, it becomes an unexpected home. Miramar Bay is the place where people find their inner truth, where their deepest desires manifest and their best selves shine through. The journey to Miramar Bay may be winding, but what one discovers there is beyond priceless.

When Connor Larkin boards a late-night bus in downtown L.A., he’s not sure where he’s going or what he’s looking for. He just knows he’s searching for something he can’t define – a part of himself he lost on the road to success – but something worth walking away from his acting career and famous fiancée to find. With the demands of Hollywood at his heels, Connor finds himself stepping into the sleepy seaside town of Miramar Bay—where one remarkable woman inspires him to rethink all of his choices…
When Connor hears familiar music drifting out of Sylvie’s restaurant, he feels as if he’s finally come home. Sylvie isn’t sure what to think when this impossibly handsome stranger applies for a waiter’s job. Yet once he serenades her customers—and slowly works his way into her heart—she realizes there’s more to him than he’s letting on. And Connor realizes he’s found his destiny. But as the outside world encroaches, threatening their fragile bond, Connor will have to risk losing everything to gain the life he longs for, and be the man Sylvie deserves. Filled with bittersweet longing, Miramar Bay is an unforgettable journey through doubt and desire—to the truth that can be discovered along the road less taken.

APRIL 2017 Monthly Meetings of FMWA

DATE: APRIL 22, 2017 Florida Chapter, Mystery Writers of America Luncheon Meeting
GUEST SPEAKER:  Dianna Collier
PROGRAM: Agents and Authors: the Good, the Bad, and the Vital

Our April 22 meeting will feature literary agent Dianna Collier, who’ll discuss the value of an agent and explain why authors wishing to go the traditionally-published route almost always require one. For those authors who are already agented, she’ll give hints on how they can improve the author/agent relationship. She also will discuss how an author can leave that relationship gracefully—and knowing when they should. For those writers who are currently are unagented, she will outline the basics: various ways of finding an agent and how to keep one; presenting material; the query letter and its additional value; and agency contracts.

Speaker:  Dianna Collier is both owner and agent at Collier & Associates, a boutique literary agency based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. She grew up in New Jersey and Florida, graduating from Boston University with a degree in languages and political science. Her first position was with Blaisdell Publishing in Boston as an editorial assistant. She later moved to New York City and worked for a tobacco magazine as assistant editor. In the 1980s, she worked with Collier Associates selling award-winning cookbooks before later joining the firm as a literary agent.
In 1994, Ms. Collier took over the agency and moved it to West Palm Beach. At that time, she expanded the agency’s representation from predominantly non-fiction titles to include a larger number of fiction works: war novels, mysteries, thrillers, cozies, and romances. The agency’s nonfiction interests continue to include biographies and autobiographies of well-known people; popular works of political subjects and history; true crime; exposes; books for the general reader on investment and business; and cookbooks by highly qualified authors. Of course, their primary interests are in well-written material presented in an unusual way.
