Award Winning Florida Novelist Larry Baker will be discussing how a writer’s personal racial history combines with the facts of American racial history to produce fiction. Are there any rules?

He will be using his latest novel, The Education of Nancy Adams, to illustrate the dilemma of a white male writer who tries to create compelling characters of different races and genders.

HOLIDAY FESTIVAL AT THE CASEMENTS

 A special celebration dubbed Chriskwanzukkah, will be held at The Casements in Ormond Beach from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21. Creative Happiness Institute (CHI), Tomoka Poets, and the Ormond Beach Arts District (OBAD) have joined together to create a novel event that will also include a Winter Solstice ceremony.

There will be music, songs, poetry and prizes with an open mic for anyone who wishes to present a holiday-themed message. The event is free and open to the public with funding in part from the Cultural Council of Volusia County. Free sweets will be available and light refreshments will be sold.

Dr. David B. Axelrod, a Volusia County Poet Laureate and director of CHI, will perform the solstice ceremony. The exact time of the solstice is 5:44 p.m. on the 21^st. “We want to honor as many traditions as we can,” says Dr. Axelrod, who promises to do so “with a light heart.”

Julia Truilo, executive director of OBAD, will also honor the occasion with a song. Mary-Ann Westbrook, president of Tomoka Poets, will host an open poetry reading. Roger Duvernoy and Mike Dorn, local singers/songwriters will also be featured and invite others to bring an instrument to perform. 

The Casements, located at 25 Riverside Drive in Ormond Beach, will be decorated for the holidays, displaying its famous Christmas tree gallery as part of their holiday gala. Murder on the Beach was founded in 1996 in Sunny Isles Beach in North Dade County by Joanne Sinchuk.  After surveying customers about the best place to open a mystery bookstore, Murder on the Beach moved to Delray Beach in 2002. In 2008, Murder on the Beach was sold to Booksmart Enterprises in Boca Raton, and Joanne stayed on as store manager.  Now located in the Pineapple Grove section of Delray Beach, Murder on the Beach is planning a Grand Twentieth Anniversary Reception on Friday Evening, January 6, 2017 from 6-9 pm.  In addition to drinks and hors d’oeuvres, many of your favorite authors will be dropping by.

Stars of Romance Holiday Book Signing to feature more than 20 authors, including N.Y. Times and USA Today bestsellers

A multi-author book signing featuring bestselling authors of romance, along with goodies and giveaways, will take place at the West Melbourne Public Library in Melbourne, Florida, on Nov. 19.

Meet the Authors Book Fair: Nancy O'Neill - Guess What Books

 

Guess What books are designed for children ages 3-7 and are written in clever, four-line rhyming clues that describe people, places, and things within a specific theme for each book. After reading or hearing the clues, turning the page reveals a colorful illustration that lets the reader know if they guessed the object correctly. With little-known facts woven into some of the clues, Guess What books provide a fun, learning experience. The most unique aspect of the series is that all of the main illustrations are drawn by Kids Around the World whose artwork is selected through a worldwide contest. To date, young artists from Australia, Poland, Italy, India, and many U.S. states have had their illustrations featured in the books.

 

Guess What is in the Ocean? is the fifth book in the series. Children learn about sea life as well as other objects that may be in the ocean or on the shore. The final rhyme is a reminder that we all need to help our environment and keep our oceans clean. This book won the #1 spot on The Gittle List.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

 

Nancy O’Neill is an award-winning author who grew up on a farm in the middle of North Dakota. She admits having to do a lot of research for this ocean book but learned a lot in the process. She appreciates her Midwestern background which she feels is the solid foundation for her lifelong accomplishments. She has always gravitated toward anything creative but also likes tech-related challenges even though she grew up long before the technology era. 

 

Nancy published her first Guess What book in 2012 and within four years, she had five books in the series along with a coloring book. In 2016, she took a giant leap and published her first adult fiction novella, Her Way Out. 

 

She enjoys being a mom, wife, author, and entrepreneur. Nancy lives in Southern California with her husband. Even though she’s only about ten miles from the ocean, she still can’t swim and is much happier relaxing on the beach or by the pool.

Meet the Author Book Fair: Klaus Kolb - Twelve Flags Book Two

Merritt Island resident Klaus Kolb’s second book Twelve Flags Book Two was released this week and will be for sale by the author Nov. 19 and 20 at the Meet the Authors Book Fair in the Eau Gallie Civic Center at the Artworks Festival.

Kolb, 82, will be available at the arts event inside the Eau Gallie Civic Center from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday to personalize and sign books. More than 50 local authors are expected to sell their books in conjunction with the festival.

Twelve Flags Book Two is a 165-page soft-cover book that outlines Kolb’s life from age 12 to 21. The book continues to chronicle his life from the time the occupation forces of the Red Army imprison his father and Communist leaders confiscate their home until his father’s release. His chapters describe how he, his grandmother and two sisters survive Communist occupation following Germany’s defeat in World War II, with the help of CARE packages from and Kolb’s hard work in mechanical and later engineering school. Kolb grew up in an Eastern province of Germany during the rise of the Nazi Party and during World War II.  At age 21, he emigrated to West Germany and in 1965, to the U.S. as president of the 160-employee Bruckner Machinery Corp. in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The firm manufactured, sold and serviced textile dyeing and finishing machinery. From 1979 to 1997, he was president of ADO Corporation, a German-owned business that manufactured and exported specialty textile fabrics and custom-made draperies.

In 1998, Kolb built his own geodesic home in Spartanburg, and later formed and served as president of Kolb’s Geodesic Homes, based there. Kolb has lived and worked in a dozen countries.

“My books give a cultural history. Teachers are using my first book Twelve Flags, One Life to tell their middle and high school students about the challenges of life growing up during Nazi control of Germany. Twelve Flags Book Two can be used to include information about living in an occupied country as a result of losing a war,” Kolb said. This is the second in a series of books planned about various stages of Kolb’s life.

The $20 book includes 40 photographs, most from Kolb’s family albums. It is available directly from the author, through Amazon Books and will soon be available for immediate download on Kindle. Kolb’s web site www.twelveflags.us describes his books.

Now retired, Kolb consults internationally about geodesic dome shell construction. He also deciphers and translates into English documents written in Old German Suetterlin Script.  Kolb plays accordion and keyboard with a German Band in Melbourne and the Harbor City Retirees’ Dance Band of Eau Gallie. He is an active member of the Central Florida Accordion Club.

Authors in the Park returns for the Fifth Annual Christmas Book-tacular on Saturday, December 10^th, 2016, at the Osprey Lodge located at 1761 Nightingale Lane, Tavares, Florida in Lake County. Over twenty local and independent authors are participating in the fifth anniversary of this popular event, made special by the appearance of two best-selling, award-winning authors.

Dan Walsh (The Unfinished Gift) and Jaimie Engle (Clifton Chase and the Arrow of Light) will be keynote speakers at a private function before the event opens to the public at 1:00 PM.

Mr. Walsh is the bestselling author of 17 novels including The Unfinished Gift, The Discovery and When Night Comes. He has won 3 Carol Awards (finalist 6 times), 3 Selah Awards and 3 of his books have been finalists for RT Review’s Inspirational Book of the Year. A member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and Word Weavers International, Dan writes fulltime in the Daytona Beach area.

The book signing event will be open to the public from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the Grand Foyer of the Osprey Lodge Assisted Living and Memory Care facility, which is opening their doors to the public for this special event. There will be a raffle drawing of multiple gift baskets. Guests will receive one entry with every $10 they spend with any participating author.

“We are excited to have the authors here and want Osprey Lodge to be a real part of the community,” said Anita Fernandez, Executive Director of Osprey Lodge Assisted Living & Memory Care. The Lodge will be decorated for Christmas. Osprey Lodge has previously hosted other art-related events.

The Authors in the Park events continue to grow each year. This special fifth anniversary will mark the largest gathering of authors of any of their previous events. The event attracts a variety of award-winning and best-selling authors in addition to the special guests, such as Steve Boone, former band member of The Lovin’ Spoonful. Book genres will range from children’s picture books to romance to non-fiction. 

“Authors of almost every genre will be coming from all across Florida,” said Mark Miller, creator of Authors in the Park. “The original vision was to bring together a group of authors that wanted to promote literacy and community involvement. Sure, we want to sell books, but we also want to give back.”

All authors will be available for photo ops, autographs and will answer questions about their books and other writing topics. The event is free to attend and open to the public. Books and other gift ideas will be available for purchase.

Miller concluded, “It is an opportunity for a reader to meet an author they might not have known about otherwise.”
