Meet the Authors Book Fair
Children’s Author E.L. Konigsburg to be Honored at Literary Legends Award Reception
2016 will mark yet another year of recognition when on Sept. 16 she will posthumously be awarded the Florida Heritage Book Festival Literary Legends Award.
“E. L. Konigsburg certainly meets all of the criteria to receive the award,” Debra Rhodes Gibson, vice-president of the festival, said. “She has produced a body of work over time that is exceptional in quality and has been widely recognized.”
Each
year the Florida Heritage Book Festival honors at least one acclaimed
author with ties to the Sunshine State. The authors are recognized at
the Literary Legends Banquet, a tradition that has seen some of
Florida’s most acclaimed writers accept their awards in person and
enthrall audiences with remarks about their legendary careers.
Posthumous Legends Awards have also been granted. Former recipients have
included John D. MacDonald (2014), Ernest Hemingway (2012) and Marjorie
Kinnan Rawlings and Zora Neale Hurston (2011).
Paul
and Ross Konigsburg, sons of E.L. Konigsburg, will be in attendance on
Sept. 16 to receive the posthumous award for their mother, who once was a
school teacher in Ponte Vedra Beach.
Konigsburg
is well-known for many of her 20 books, the most popular of which
include the Newbery Medal Award winners “The Mixed-up Files of Mrs.
Basil E. Frankweiler” and “The View from Saturday.” The former told the
adventure of two children who ran away from home to live in the
Metropolitan Museum of Art and the latter, of middle schoolers who form a
special bond with their paraplegic teacher.
Konigsburg’s
recognition marks an effort on the part of the Florida Heritage Book
Festival to include children’s and young adult authors in its events,
especially the author presentations.
“We
are hoping to include more young people and families in this annual
event, inspiring the next generation of writers and readers, embedding
an appreciation for sharing literature among families and across all
generations,” Gibson said.
The
Literary Legends Award Reception, which will induct Konigsburg into the
festival’s Literary Legends Hall of Fame, will be held Friday, Sept.
16, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Flagler College’s Solarium, on the top
floor of Ponce Hall. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be served. To register and purchase tickets, visit here: http://fhbookfest.com/events/literary-legends-banquet.

Writer's Atelier Presents: Submissions Ready with Lori Goldstein (Online Class)
Description:
Got
a finished novel? Great! Ready to sign that killer book deal?
Fantastic! But hold onto your pen, because first, you need an agent.
Agents are the gatekeepers to traditional publishers, and today, agents
receive literally hundreds of inquiries a week. To stand out among this
fierce competition, three things are vital: an enticing query, a concise
synopsis, and a whopper of a first page. In this course, writers will
learn the structure and key elements of each of these three pieces of
the query submission package. Examples of successful queries, synopses,
and first pages will be dissected. Plus, each week, writers will have
their work reviewed by the instructor. But the real value in receiving a
critique is in understanding if you’ve nailed that revision or not.
With that in mind, writers will be invited to submit their revised
pieces to the instructor for an additional pass. Each component—the
query, synopsis, and first page—will be critiqued by the instructor
twice. The end result: a perfect query submission package. You will
become . . . Submission Ready!
Week 1: The Query: How to Tame Your Manuscript into a 250-Word Pitch
In
this first lesson, the instructor will dive into the all-important
query letter. Writers will learn the basic structure and what each
component must convey. The instructor will then focus on the “pitch”
section, explaining how to construct a concise pitch that packs a punch.
Examples of successful queries will be shown and dissected. The “do’s
and don’ts” will provide concrete tips for crafting your query.
After
viewing this lesson, writers will have one week to revise their query
using these tips and submit it to the instructor for feedback.
Week 2: The Synopsis: How to Wrangle Your Manuscript into One Page
In
lesson two, the instructor will help you expand that pitch you’ve honed
into a one-page synopsis. Writers will learn techniques for boiling
their full manuscript down to the essentials in order to show agents
what their novel is truly about. What stays and what goes will be
demonstrated. Strategies and specific instructions will allow writers to
employ these techniques in their synopsis.
After
viewing this lesson, writers will have one week to revise their
synopsis using these tips and submit it to the instructor for feedback.
Week 3: The First Page: How to Bring Your Query and Synopsis to Life
In
the final lesson, the instructor will discuss what makes a great first
page, the final element of the submissions package. The first page must
be a powerhouse. It has much heavy lifting to do in terms of setting the
tone, style, character, world, and more. It must achieve certain things
and do so with writing that leaps from the page and grabs the reader.
After reviewing a list of what a first page must do, the instructor will
provide examples of successful first pages.
After
viewing this lesson, writers will have one week to revise their first
page using these tips and submit it to the instructor for feedback.
Week 4: Questions!
In
the final week of this course, writers will have the chance to have a
personal, one-on-one, 15-minute call with the instructor during which
they can ask specifics about their submission package, questions about
querying, or tips for navigating the publishing world. Writers have the
option of emailing questions in lieu of the call.
When: This class will run from October 3, 2016 – October 30, 2016
Where: Online
Investment: $250 (full class) OR $150 (critique only)
*First 10 people to sign up by September 1, 2016 will receive 25% off of the 4-week class.
*Need a payment plan? Email racquel@racquelhenry.com

Yesterday's Tomorrow by G. W. Pomichter
Author and journalist G.W. Pomichter, the host of the Hangin With Web Show and creator of The Lucky Marks Mystery novels, has released his latest book, Yesterday’s Tomorrow. This near future speculative fiction thriller is a collaboration with friend William DuPree, and ponders some timely “what-ifs.”
“We
had so much fun and learned so much researching this book,” Pomichter
said. “It was quite a journey and one that we hope will help our
readers suspend disbelief and ask themselves some tough and even
uncomfortable questions.”
The
book is set in a near future where a nuclear attack and subsequent
electro-magnetic-pulse render the U.S. power grid inoperable along the
East Coast of the country from Maine to Miami and as far West as the
Mississippi River. The story follows two families, both spread out
throughout the country and , in fact, the world when these critical
disasters occur.
“We
ask the question, quite simply, ‘What would you do,’” Pomichter said.
“We outline the how and why and give you a story to follow, but within
the context of this new reality, the heart of the book is about how
human beings interact, how we communicate and how we survive. It is
about you. It is about asking the question, 'could I survive?’ or
‘Could I rebuild.””
The book is now available on amazon.com at: (https://www.amazon.com/Yesterdays-Tomorrow-Tomorrows-War-Book-ebook/dp/B01KIIR8SU)
OR in paperback: (https://www.amazon.com/Yesterdays-Tomorrow-Tomorrows-War-1/dp/1530454557)

YOUNG POETS OFFERED SPECIAL PROGRAM
Volusia
County residents between the ages of 14 and 20 can enroll in a free
Young Poets Mentoring Program that will link them to established poets
and result in publication. The program is directed by Volusia County
Poet Laureate Dr. David B. Axelrod and starts this August.
Young
poets and their mentors will set a schedule to exchange emails and
possibly to meet personally to help write, revise and assemble a group
of poems. The results will include performance opportunities and
publication in an anthology. Twelve or twenty individual young poets may have a first book published.
Funding
for the project is provided by the Walmart, the Root Family, Daytona
Kia, Daytona Toyota and numerous other groups and individuals. In
addition to free lessons, both the young poets and mentors will have a
small budget to cover the costs of supplies and/or transportation.
Dr. Axelrod will donate copies of his own book, All Vows: New & Selected Poems (Nirala, 2016) together with a Student and Teacher Guide. The books will be given to each mentor and student as well as copies to teachers and students in schools Dr. Axelrod visits.

YOUNG POETS PROGRAM LAUNCHES “LOUDER THAN A BOMB”
The
award-winning documentary film, “Louder than a Bomb” will be shown at 2
p.m. on Sunday, September 18, free at City Island Library to celebrate
the start of the Volusia County Young Poets Mentoring Program. The film
traces high school poets who prepare and compete in poetry slam
competitions.
The
event will be hosted Volusia County Poet Laureate, Dr. David B.
Axelrod, who has fund raised to coordinate the Mentoring Program.
Students—ages 14 to 20—will be paired with established poets who will
help them write, revise and collect together a group of poems. The
results will be performance opportunities, anthology publication, and
even the chance for the free publication of a first book.
“Many
people think of poetry as a bit like plain popcorn—bland at best,” says
Dr. Axelrod. “When people view ‘Louder than a Bomb,’ poetry is more
like the new snack-food craze, Takis—pretty hot.” It’s not that young
poets all want to slam, Axelrod explains, but the program will encourage
experimentation and individual creativity.
There
will be an open mic to read poems after the film. Mentoring will be
done on line—at the convenience of the students and mentors. There are
no set times though it is also hoped that students and mentors can meet
for workshops as well.
