Creative Happiness Institute, CHI, a non-profit sponsor of writing and arts activities, will begin a new series of writing workshops on Thursday, November 3. The 5-session cycle will continue every other Thursday—November 17, December 1, 15 and 29.
While poetry will be the main emphasis, the same techniques taught could also foster short stories and memoirs. “We will use meditation exercises to help us focus on and describe places, people, events that are a strong source of creative writing,” explains Dr. David B. Axelrod, the workshop teacher. “The best writing is a process of self-discovery.”
Dr. Axelrod is known for teaching the healing power of writing. As founder of CHI, he points out that the acronym also refers to the Chinese idea of universal or creative energy. “Through meditation, we can focus that energy and write very powerfully.” CHI’s motto is, “Be creative, be well.”
The fee per session is $20, or $75 for all 5 sessions paid in advance, which includes a copy of Dr. Axelrod’s 22nd book of poetry, All Vows: New & Selected Poems, together with a guide for poetry writing. Workshops will include writing exercises and discussion of participants’ creations.
Workshops are held 7 to 9 p.m. at the Creative Happiness Institute, 1104 Jacaranda Avenue, Daytona Beach. Pre-registration is required. For more information, call Dr. Axelrod, 386-337-4567 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
