Palm Beach Visual Arts by Deborah C. Pollack

A history of Palm Beach’s visual arts is like a history of art itself, and it is equally as fascinating. Written by author Deborah C. Pollack with the cooperation of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach Visual Arts (Pelican Publishing Company) is the first book to comprehensively explore the incredible story of the island and the painters, photographers, sculptors, artisans, art dealers, and philanthropists drawn to it. This lavishly illustrated portrait is more than a history: it uncovers, emphasizes, and analyzes the significant art created in Palm Beach, revealing in great detail how a barrier island enclave of the super wealthy was transformed into a prominent and influential locus for the arts. And because West Palm Beach is just over the bridge, its art and artists are also explored. Luminaries include the Kennedys, Sylvester Stallone, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Cecil Beaton, Salvador Dali, Florenz Ziegfeld, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Addison Mizner, Gertrude Lawrence, George Hamilton, and Gloria Vanderbilt. Paintings by Laurencin, Monet, Renoir, Vermeer, Van Gogh, and Gauguin are also included.

Rave Reviews for Palm Beach Visual Arts:
“What better way to learn the rich history of the visual arts in the paradise that is Palm Beach than through Deborah’s exquisitely written and illustrated book?”--Marisa J. Pascucci, Curator of Collections at Boca Raton Museum of Art
“Deborah Pollack is a valuable asset as the conservator of the history of Florida’s visual arts. Her latest magnum opus, Palm Beach Visual Art, is elegant, scholarly, and most significant.”
--Molly Charland, Director of Education, Society of the Four Arts
“In documenting the art of Palm Beach, Florida, Deborah Pollack has written an important volume which chronicles a previously untold chapter in the history of Florida’s most iconic gold coast town. As lavish and rich as her subject matter, Pollack’s work is both scholarly as well as visually captivating. Palm Beach Visual Arts is a must read for anyone interested in Florida and American art.”  --Robert Harper III, Executive Director, Lightner Museum
“Filled with fabulous photos of paintings, sculptures, artists, and socialites, Deborah Pollack imparts entertaining and scholarly insight as to how art served as the catalyst to forming one of the most beautiful and affluent resorts in the world, the island of Palm Beach. …The intersection of art and commerce continues to this day. …Open this book and take a tour of the lush beauty of Palm Beach through the lens of artists!” –Catherine Whitney, art collector

Writer’s Block Bookstore Present: Nathan Hill

Theme: Author
Location: Writer’s Block Bookstore
Date: November, 29 2016
Time: 6pm- 8pm
124 E. Welbourne Avenue, Winter Park, Florida

Winter Park, FL (October 26, 2016) On November, Writer's Block Bookstore will host Bestselling Author Nathan Hill, most notable for his debut novel, The Nix.  The event will be NOVEMBER 29 from 6PM – 8PM Nathan Hill will be promoting his debut novel The Nix.

Nathan Hill is a New York Times bestselling author and an Associate Professor of English at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. His debut novel The Nix was named as one of fall’s best books by, Barnes & Noble, Audible, Powell’s, IndieNext, Entertainment Weekly, Vogue, and many others. The Nix will be published worldwide in more than 20 languages. His short stories have been published in many literary journals, including The Iowa Review, Agni, The Gettysburg Review, The Denver Quarterly, and Fiction, which awarded him its annual Fiction Prize.

In The Nix it’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s reappeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl, who married her high-school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: she’s facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuel’s help.

Praise for The Nix: “Hill has so much talent to burn that he can pull off just about any style, imagine himself into any person and convincingly portray any place or time. “The Nix” is hugely entertaining and unfailingly smart, and the author seems incapable of writing a pedestrian sentence or spinning a boring story.” —The New York Times Book Review

Event will take place November 29 from 6pm – 8pm at Writer’s Block Bookstore

For those who are hoping to pre-order The Nix, can be directed to the following link:

The award was announced at FWA’s recent four-day annual conference in Altamonte Springs, Florida. This annual competition, which received 479 submissions, was RPLA’s fifteenth.
"This is the most comprehensive and competitive RPLA we’ve ever had,” said Chris Coward, RPLA chairperson.
In all, the competition covered 26 adult genres and 15 youth genres, with published and unpublished entries considered separately.
“I am truly honored by this recognition. I absolutely fell in love with  Mud’s antihero while writing this book, and it means the world to me any time I get affirmation that he has done the same for readers,” said E. J. Wenstrom.
About the 2016 Book of the Year
In Mud: Chronicles of the Third Realm War, Adem is a golem who desperately wants to be human makes an impulsive deal with an angel to fulfill his wish. But first, the golem must break into the Underworld and steal back the soul of the angel’s long-dead human love.  Along the way, he unintentionally sets free a group of rebel demigods determined to usurp the gods, and becomes entangled in ages-old war between the realms. Mud is E. J. Wenstrom’s debut novel, and the first book in a developing series.
"The twists and turns of Adam’s quest keep the reader on edge page after page. The author does a masterful job of raising and lowering tension," one RPLA judge stated. Judges must remain anonymous to protect the integrity of the competition.

Author Quits Day Job to Pursue Full-Time Writing Career

Jaimie Engle signs contract with literary agent for next fiction novel, and closes doors to lucrative editing firm

—Jaimie Engle,
Four years ago author Jaimie Engle officially opened her doors to A Writer For Life, a full service editing, coaching, and marketing firm to assist authors with book publication. Her more than fifty clients include picture book authors, non-fiction writers, award-winning children’s book authors, and traditionally published fiction writers. The lucrative business has funded her own book projects and she has independently published two novels, a coloring book, a teacher’s guide, one novella, and a non-fiction book on writing. Only this October, Engle closed the doors to her firm to pursue a full-time career as a novelist.
“A Writer For Life was a wonderful experience and it opened many doors for teaching opportunities across the country, including courses at Eastern Florida State College, where I’ve been since 2014,” shares Engle. “It was bittersweet to say good-bye to a successful business, but in order to grow JME Books and my work as a professional author, I have to focus 100% of my efforts on writing and speaking.”
Engle signed with agent Saritza Hernandez of the Corvisiero Agency in August to represent her next novel EXPOSURE, a young adult paranormal that will make you question everything about the afterlife.
“I’m super-excited to finally be able to say that I rep the amazing Jaimie Engle,” shares Hernandez. “This partnership has been in the works for months as we’ve known each other through the Florida Writers Association conferences (and mini-conferences) over the years but never had an opportunity to work together until she queried me with a great contemporary horror young adult work that I just adore!”
Engle pens cutting-edge storytelling with a touch of the supernatural. Her YA fantasy and sci-fi adventures have won several awards including CLIFTON CHASE AND THE ARROW OF LIGHT (BRAG Medallion, 2016 / Kid Lit Top Ten Pick, 2014), THE DREDGE (Writer’s of the Future Award, 2014), and DREADLANDS (Nebula, FL Sunshine State, and Tiptree Nominee, 2016). As a child, she fell into the pages of Alice in Wonderland, which inspired her to become a YA author. Jaimie’s imagination and love of “what-if” scenarios infuse the real world with what’s hiding just around the bend. Her passion is talking to kids about writing and social issues because words have power. Currently, she lives in Melbourne, FL, with her awesome husband, hilarious boys, and the world’s greatest dog. She is always working on her next best book!

Naked Alliances by S.K. Nicholls Slated for National Release

The debut release in The Naked Eye Private Investigator Series,
Naked Alliances will be available wherever fine books are sold in late October

ORLANDO, Florida – Florida novelist S.K. Nicholls announces the upcoming publication of her new crime thriller, Naked Alliances.  Slated for simultaneous publication in trade paper (978-0989568609, 238 pages, $14.50) and eBook ($2.99) editions, Naked Alliances will be available where fine books are sold on October 24, 2016.

In Naked Alliances, Nicholls takes readers on a witty, wild, wickedly fun romp that exposes a side of Orlando tourists rarely see. The debut release in The Naked Eye Private Investigator Series, Naked Alliances introduces lone wolf P.I. Richard Noggin.

About Naked Alliances: When a young immigrant woman and an exotic dancer are forced to flee men with guns and have no place to hide, Richard Noggin, P.I., can’t turn his back—even if helping out makes him a target. Richard plans to impress an aspiring politician by taking on a big white-collar case that could take him from the streets to an air-conditioned office. Instead, he's handed a cold case and quickly finds himself sucked into a shadowy world of sex, secrets and…murder. Marked for a bullet and stretched thin by his investigations, Richard reluctantly teams up with the unlikely, brassy custodian of the young woman on the run. With bodies piling up, Richard and his companion are forced to go undercover in a most unlikely locale: the Leisure Lagoon, a nudist resort.  Going undercover in this instance will mean going uncovered…but lives are at stake—and this Naked Eye will have to juggle to keep his balls in the air and connect the dots before anyone else is murdered. As his pulse-quickening quest for answers leads from the dark corners of Orlando’s Little Saigon to the sunny exposure of the Leisure Lagoon, Richard will be put to the test. Just how much will this Naked Eye have to bear…or bare? The heat is on in this quirky Sunshine State crime thriller.

A taut, twisty, tour de force of the seedier side of Orlando that the amusement parks try to hide from public view, Naked Alliances has received high early praise:

“Richard Noggin and his trusty sidekick expose the bare truth about a ten-year-old-murder and get to the bottom of an ugly human trafficking scheme. With tight prose and a cast of unforgettable characters, Naked Alliances doesn’t let up until you’ve seen it all”
Tim Baker, author of Eyewitness Blues

Naked Alliances offers a rollicking good time, a dose of evil, a murder to solve, and characters you want to get to know better.  All in a well-written package that begs for more stories to come.”
–Mark Paxson, author of One Night in Bridgeport

S.K. Nicholls’ family owns and operates one of the oldest and largest nudist resorts in the nation located in Central Florida, Cypress Cove. Her experience gives her a deep understanding of the lifestyle choice and how it is extremely different from the sex industry, yet harbors clandestine elements of intrigue and fascination. Social issues are at the forefront of her writing. A former sexual assault nurse examiner, she has a special interest in the subject matter of sex-trafficking. A native of Georgia, she lives in Orlando, Florida with her husband, Greg.
Naked Alliances is published by Brave Blue Heron Books. Members of the news media wishing to request additional information about Naked Alliances are asked to contact Maryglenn McCombs by phone:  (615) 297-9875, or email:
