On Sunday, April 24, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., Creative Happiness Institute will hold its annual April National Poetry Month Festival. The event, held in the Gallery of The Casements in Ormond Beach, will feature forty poets and singers/songwriters and an open mic for audience members to read poems
of their own.
The afternoon will begin with a greeting from Julia Truilo, Executive Director of Ormond Beach MainStreet. Volusia County Poet Laureate Dr. David B. Axelrod will emcee the performances.There will be a special appearance from the husband-and-wife poetry team, Tim and Regina Gort from Gwinn, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Local co-sponsoring group Tomoka Poets representatives will include B.J. Alligood, Fred Booth, and Lenny Schneir. Other groups sending their poets will be Live Poets, Florida State Poets Association, MainStreet Art and Culture Slam, Daytona State College, and Deltona High School. Musical entertainment will include Lana Chapel, Lady Love Rebel (Bodil Haheim), Elliot Kane, Roger Duvernoy, and a special satiric song medley by Robert Blenheim.
Sister Cities of Volusia County will provide free light refreshments, and snacks and beverages will also be for sale. The event is made possible by funding in part from a grant by the Cultural Council of Volusia County, and is open to the public free of charge.
