A March Mad Slam will offer performance poets a chance to compete on Saturday, March 5, 9:30 p.m. at Cinematique. The event, made possible in part by a grant from the Cultural Council of Volusia County, is co-sponsored by Creative Happiness Institute and MACDeLand Slam.
Featured slam performer for the evening will be Shawn Welcome, a nationally known poet with more than 10 years of experience including stints as spokesperson for companies such as Nike, Johnson & Johnson, The Orlando Magic, and more. Shawn created and currently hosts “Diverse Word,” at Dandelion Communitea Cafe in Orlando, a weekly poetry open mic that includes comedy, music and slams. Started in 2006, it is the longest running open mic in Orlando.
Cinematique offers a cash first prize of $50 and a $25 gift certificate as second prize. The slam draws a good audience that cheers on the participants. “Slam is a great entertainment, not just for poets but for the general public,” says Volusia County Poet Laureate, David B. Axelrod, who emcees the event with slam master Kevin Campbell, founder of MACDeLand Slam and Breaking Bad Poets.
Admission is $5 for the event, open to the public, and if time allows, there will be an open mic after the contest. Cinematique is located at 242 S. Beach Street in Daytona Beach.
