OCTOBER 17, 2015: MYSTERY WRITERS OF AMERICA, FLORIDA CHAPTER, LUNCHEON

Guest Speaker:          Speaker:  Alison McMahan
Program:  “Screenwriting Tricks for Novelists”

Learn techniques that screenwriters use as they prepare to write a screenplay: the overall structure, the sequences and scenes, the characters, the character relationships, the point of view, and the relationship of theme to the other parts. Specifically we will look at film sequences (sometimes called the mini-movie method), the Save-the-Cat beat sheet and recent examples where Save the Cat was turned on its head, and how these screenwriting systems can be applied to novels.

Alison McMahan, Ph.D., is a screenwriter, author and filmmaker. She is the president of Homunculus Productions, a company that produces industrial, educational and documentary films. Her most recent film is Bare Hands and Wooden Limbs (2010) narrated by Sam Waterston. She is currently in post-production on the feature documentary The Eight Faces of Jane (2015). From 1997 to 2001 she was an associate professor, teaching film history and theory and new media at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands.  She is the author the award-winning book Alice Guy Blaché, Lost Visionary of the Cinema (Bloomsbury 2002), which was translated into Spanish by Plots Ediciones. The films rights to this book have been sold to a Hollywood agency for production as a documentary, Be Natural. (www.BeNatural.com). She is also the author of  The Films of Tim Burton: Animating Live Action in Hollywood (Bloomsbury 2005). Her latest award-winning screenplay, White Rum, is being marketed by Scriptshark.  Her first novel, a historical mystery for young adults, The Saffron Crocus, was published by Black Opal Books in 2014.
