PROGRAM: The Art of the Critique
A successful critique is a powerful tool in an author’s arsenal, but the mere mention of the word can often make a writer cringe with fear. What constitutes a successful critique? What are commonalities? How can you gauge receptiveness? How can you critique someone with more writing experience? What is taboo and what is not? Barbara Flores will answer all your questions and lead you through what can be a prickly maze or a work of art.
Even experienced authors need love and not only benefit from critiques, but will be present to offer sage advice. In addition, Barbara will help attendees find local connections to facilitate the forming of personal critique groups. Please bring 3 pages and be prepared to read aloud to your table.
Barbara Flores has an MFA in Writing and Literature and is currently a professor at Palm Beach Atlantic University, teaching on campuses in West Palm Beach and Wellington. She also taught writing at U.C. Berkeley Extension, St Mary’s College in California, and Palm Beach Atlantic University. Furthermore, she is an award winning author, having penned three nonfiction books, multiple plays (including a Eugene O’Neil award finalist), recent articles in MORE and DIABLE magazines, and a soon to be published memoir.
