What does it take to meet with Mary Burton—maybe over coffee—for a 20-minute interview? What does it take to also receive an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of her next book—No Escape—two months before its release in November? All this, while promoting literacy through the Florida Writers Foundation?
Just an email.
We’re talking about an auction offered by the Florida Writers Foundation (FWF), a charitable organization that promotes literacy. This sister organization to FWA is sponsoring an email auction for the chance to read the ARC of No Escape and to interview its mega-bestselling author.
How it works
Send an email to AuthorAuction@Verizon.net and provide your name and FWA ID number. (You can get this number from your FWA membership card, on your FWA magazine or eNews, or from your Writers Group Leader or the FWA Secretary [firstname.lastname@example.org].) You’ll receive a return email informing you of the amount of the highest bid and inviting you to top it.
As the auction continues, you’ll receive regular blind emails updating you on the amounts of the top five bids. We’ll also intermittently post updates on the FWA Facebook Conference Page [https://www.facebook.com/pages/Florida-Writers-Conference/92071688082?ref=hl] and FWA Facebook Group Page [https://www.facebook.com/groups/52469705650/].
In September, the two highest bidders each will receive the ARC of No Escape. In October, they’ll also have a 20-minute interview with Mary at the annual Florida Writers Conference. The winners will have a combined interview, so the questions asked by one can be shared with the other.
Throughout the process, bidders will remain anonymous; only the names of the winners will be revealed, and only after the auction is over.
If you’re a winner, you’ll be asked to review the book or write up the interview in a media release, article, or book review, which you’ll place with a newsworthy source. This way, both you and Mary get publicity. And, yep, if you’re paid for your write-up, you keep the money. You may also want to explore venues for republication—Amazon, B&N, Goodreads, Bookreporter.com, among others—which will get your name out in more places.
NOTE: You don't have to be an FWA member to bid, but as of September 1, 2013, winners must have their FWA memberships paid at least through October 20, 2013, and must be registered for the 2013 Florida Writers Conference, where the interview with Mary Burton (MaryBurton.com) will be conducted.
Bid early and often; the auction for this prize closes September 1, 2013. The email address again: AuthorAuction@Verizon.net.
Two big events. One, Mary will conduct an FWF-sponsored all-day workshop October 17, 2013, at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary. See below for additional information. Two, Mary’s publisher, Kensington/Zebra, is donating a large number of Mary’s backlist books to FWF’s Silent Auction, which will be held during the annual Florida Writers Conference. For you, this means yet another chance to get your Mary “reading fix” (and possibly autograph) while supporting programs for literacy.
The Florida Writers Conference, “The Greatest Writers Conference on Earth,” will be held October 18-20, 2013, at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary. See the FWA website, floridawriters.net, to learn more and to register.
The FWF Celebrity Workshop is October 17, 2013, at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary. For details and to register, please visit the Florida Writers Foundation website: floridawritersfoundation.org.
