Nicholas That’s Ridiculous! A Story About Being a Boy is a charming book by Christa Carpenter for children 4 through 8 who want a fun book about what it means to be a boy. The notion that Nicholas engages in ridiculous behavior throughout the day is endearing. During the first part of the story, his mother points out the instances of his ridiculous-ness, but when she thinks about it, she realizes that he isn’t ridiculous at all; he’s just being a boy.
The text is succinct and right on target for the audience, and the illustrations by Mark Wayne Adams are wonderful. Nicholas is depicted perfectly throughout the book and the whimsical beautiful drawings make the book come alive.
The author has included within the book Book Talk. It includes a list of questions and topics to elicit discussion and imaginative thinking.
